Types of Temperature Labels

Understanding the different technologies behind temperature labels is crucial for selecting the right tool for your application. Here is a breakdown of the three main categories.

Instant Activation

Single-Use Irreversible

Permanent Color Change

These labels are designed to provide immediate, undeniable proof that a specific temperature threshold has been reached or exceeded.

How It Works

Once the label is exposed to its rated temperature, the chemical indicator melts and is absorbed into the viewing window, permanently changing its color (usually from white/silver to black/red).

Crucial Note: Even if the color change is only partial, the label is considered ACTIVATED. It has changed state and cannot be reset.

  • Ideal for warranty claims and sterilization proof.
  • Provides a permanent, tamper-proof record.
  • Available in single-point or multi-level configurations.

Chemical Melt

Time-Temperature Indicators

Tracking Exposure Over Time

Unlike instant-activation labels, Time-Temperature Indicators (TTIs) tell you not only if a temperature breach occurred, but for how long.

The Formulation & Process

These labels use a specially formulated chemical that is integrated into the packaging of the label itself.

  • The Melt: When the temperature exceeds the threshold, the chemical begins to melt and migrate along a track or window.
  • The Stop: If the temperature drops back into the safe zone, the chemical solidifies, and the migration stops.
  • The Resume: If the temperature rises again, the chemical melts and continues its journey.

By reading how far the color has progressed along the track, you can calculate the cumulative time the product spent outside its safe temperature range.

Common Misconception

When a label says it has an "8-hour window," people often think the label is only good for 8 hours total. That is not true. The time window refers to the cumulative exposure time above the threshold. If the label is activated but stays under the threshold temperature, it can continue to monitor accurately for many months.

Combination Labels

Time/Temp + Permanent High

The Best of Both Worlds

Combination labels provide comprehensive monitoring by integrating two distinct technologies into a single indicator. They track cumulative time spent above a specific temperature threshold, while also featuring a separate window that permanently changes color if a critical high-temperature limit is breached.

Example: WarmMark Duo

The WarmMark Duo (WMSSEN010) is a prime example of this technology, designed to monitor temperatures during shipping and storage:

  • Time/Temperature Tracking: Monitors cumulative time above 10°C (50°F).
  • Permanent High Alert: Features a separate window that permanently changes color if the temperature spikes above 34°C (93°F).

Reversible Labels

Liquid Crystal Technology

Current Status Monitoring

Reversible labels act like a traditional thermometer. They use cholesteric liquid crystals that twist and reflect different colors of light (Red, Green, Blue) depending on the current temperature. They change back and forth continuously as the temperature fluctuates.
